How does ChatGPT decide what to cite?

ChatGPT cites a source when it can find the page, extract a clean answer from it, and trust that the answer is right. In practice that comes down to three things: retrieval (it can reach your page), extraction (your content is clearly structured), and trust (you're corroborated and authoritative on the topic).

01

Retrieval: it has to find you first

ChatGPT reaches the live web through crawlers like GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot. If your robots.txt blocks them, your page simply isn't in the pool it can cite.

Allowing the AI crawlers you want visibility in is step zero - a setting on your site, not something the content can fix.

02

Extraction: a clean, liftable answer

Once it can read you, it favours pages that answer the question directly and early, with question-shaped headings and self-contained sections it can quote without ambiguity.

A page that buries the answer under a long intro, or wanders, is hard to cite - so it usually isn't.

03

Trust: corroboration and authority

Engines distrust claims they can't verify. Sources that are specific, factual, and echoed by other reputable sites are safer to quote - which is where your wider authority and links matter.

Being clear and being trusted work together: structure gets you considered, authority gets you chosen.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to be cited by ChatGPT?

No. Citation is earned by being findable, clear and trustworthy, not bought.

Does it just cite the top Google result?

Not necessarily. It draws on sources it can retrieve and trust, which overlaps with strong search results but isn't identical - clear, citable structure can matter more.

How do I check if I'm citable?

Run your page through an AI-visibility check: it scores answer-first structure, headings, FAQ, schema, depth and crawler access, and shows what to fix.
