What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is optimising your content so generative AI search - the systems that write an answer rather than list links - surfaces and cites it. It's the same core idea as Answer Engine Optimization: earn a place in the AI's answer, not just a link on a page.

01

GEO, AEO and SEO

The terms overlap. SEO targets ranking on a search results page. AEO and GEO both target being used inside an AI-generated answer - GEO is the label often used when the focus is generative systems specifically.

In practice you optimise the same way for all three: clear, answer-first, well-structured, factual content.

02

What generative engines reward

Generative engines assemble answers from sources they can parse and trust. They favour content that is specific, well-structured, and directly answers a question, over vague or padded marketing copy.

Named entities, concrete facts, clean headings and structured data all help a generative engine understand and reuse your content.

03

How to optimise for GEO

Lead every page with a direct answer. Break content into self-contained, question-shaped sections. Add a real FAQ and structured data. Keep claims grounded and specific.

Then measure: see which of your pages generative engines are actually citing and driving visits from, and write more of what works.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO the same as AEO?

They're used almost interchangeably. Both mean optimising to be cited inside an AI-generated answer. GEO emphasises generative systems; AEO emphasises answer engines. The optimisation is the same.

Do I need different content for GEO and SEO?

No. Answer-first, well-structured content tends to do well in both generative search and classic search - you're making one strong page, not two.
