Why AEO matters now
More people are getting answers straight from an AI instead of clicking through a list of links. When that happens, the winner isn't the top blue link - it's whichever source the AI trusts and names.
If your content isn't structured for extraction, the AI may summarise a competitor, or answer without crediting anyone. AEO is how you become the cited source.
How AEO works
Answer engines look for content they can lift cleanly: a direct answer to a specific question, in self-contained chunks, backed by concrete facts.
That means opening with the answer (not a warm-up intro), using question-shaped headings, a clear FAQ, and structured data so the engine understands what the page is.
The building blocks of an AEO-ready page
Answer-first: the first two to four sentences fully answer the core question on their own. Question-shaped sections: each heading is a real question a person would ask. Extractable chunks: every section stands alone if lifted out of context.
Add a short FAQ with direct answers, mark it up with FAQPage schema, keep the content specific and grounded, and make sure AI crawlers are allowed to read the page.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO different from SEO?
They overlap, but SEO optimises to rank a link on a results page, while AEO optimises to be the source an AI quotes in its answer. Answer-first structure and clear FAQs matter more for AEO.
How do I know if my page is AEO-ready?
Check whether it opens with a direct answer, uses question-shaped headings, has a real FAQ with schema, and is substantial and specific. A free AI-visibility check can score it for you.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Good AEO content usually ranks well in classic search too. It's an evolution of the same goal - being found - for a world where the answer often arrives without a click.
