What AEO is, and why search changed

The shift from ranking on a results page to being the source an AI answer quotes.

Search moved into the answer

For twenty years, search engine optimisation meant one thing: get your page as high as possible on a results page so that a person scanning ten blue links would click yours. The whole discipline was built around that click.

That is no longer where most questions end. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini or another assistant a question, they usually get a written answer straight away. Often they never see a list of links at all, and never click through to a website. The answer is the destination.

This changes the goal completely. Ranking first for a keyword is worth far less if the person reading the AI answer never scrolls down to the links. What matters now is whether the AI's answer names your business, quotes your page, and points people to you as the trusted source.

AEO and GEO, in plain terms

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of making your content the thing an AI answer engine picks up and quotes when it responds to a question your customers ask. Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the same idea, named for the generative AI systems doing the answering. The two terms are used interchangeably; this site uses AEO.

The important mental shift is this: you are no longer writing for a ranking algorithm that sorts links. You are writing for a system that reads many sources, decides which ones are clear, specific and trustworthy, and then rewrites the best of them into a single answer, crediting the sources it used.

  • Old goal: be the highest link a human clicks.
  • New goal: be the source the AI reads, trusts and names in its answer.
  • Same business outcome: the right person arrives ready to buy, book or enquire.

Why this is an opportunity, not a threat

It is easy to read all this as bad news: if people stop clicking links, where does your traffic come from? But the businesses that adapt early win disproportionately. AI answers name only a handful of sources. If yours is one of them, you are not one of ten blue links competing for a click, you are one of two or three names the AI actually says out loud.

The rest of RankMoss University explains, step by step, how the platform helps you become that named source: how it learns your business, writes content built to be quoted, keeps that content safe for your domain, delivers it to your own site, and then measures whether the AI engines actually cite you.
