Competing in AI answers: using the sources it cites

How to turn the list of who gets cited instead of you into a plan to overtake them.

Knowing who to beat

For every question you track, RankMoss shows the third-party sites the engines quoted, ranked by how often they appear across your questions. This is the most actionable competitive intelligence in the platform, because it names, in plain sight, exactly which pages you have to beat to win a citation.

It turns a vague worry into a concrete target. Instead of wondering why you are invisible, you can see that a particular competitor or directory keeps being the source, and go directly after that.

Reading what the sources tell you

The same site appearing across many of your questions is your strongest signal: it is the incumbent the engines trust for your topic, and displacing it on even a few questions is worth a lot. A scattered list, where each question has different sources, means no single competitor owns the space, which is an easier opening for you to become the consistent answer.

It is also worth noticing what kind of source is winning. If it is a general directory or a thin aggregator, a genuinely specific, expert page from you can beat it on quality. If it is a deep, authoritative competitor, you will need to match their depth on that exact question rather than skim it.

Turning it into a plan

The move is simple to state: for a question where a competitor is cited and you are not, either write the answer-first page you are missing, or, if you already have a page, refresh it into a stronger, more direct, more specific version than theirs. Then let the next citation check show whether you have overtaken them.

Because the checks run continuously, this becomes a measurable contest rather than a guess. You make a page better, and you watch whether the engines switch to citing you for that question. That feedback is what makes competing in AI answers a process you can actually run, not just react to.
